How professional tax works
Professional tax is a tax that state governments levy on anyone earning an income from salary, profession, trade or employment. Your employer deducts it from your salary and deposits it with the state. It is small by design: the Constitution caps it at 2,500 rupees per person per year.
Key points
- It is a state levy, so the slab and the amount depend entirely on where you work.
- The yearly total can never exceed 2,500 rupees in any state.
- Higher earners pay the top slab; lower earners often pay nil.
- Professional tax paid is deductible from salary for income tax (Section 16(iii) in the 1961 Act numbering), but only under the old tax regime.
Collection cycles differ
- Most states deduct it monthly.
- Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry collect it half yearly.
- Bihar and Manipur collect it yearly.
- Several states add a slightly higher deduction in the last month (often February) so the annual total reaches 2,500.
Why your state matters
Two people earning the same salary can pay different professional tax just because they sit in different states. A few examples at a 40,000 rupee monthly salary:
| State | How it is charged | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra | 200 a month, 300 in February (women up to 25,000 a month pay nil) | ₹2,500 |
| Karnataka | 200 a month, 300 in February (nil up to 24,999 a month, from 1 April 2025) | ₹2,500 |
| West Bengal | 150 a month at this salary band | ₹1,800 |
| Tamil Nadu | Half yearly slab, top band at this salary | ₹2,500 |
| Telangana | 200 a month | ₹2,400 |

Frequently asked questions
What is professional tax?
It is a small tax that state governments levy on income from salary, profession, trade or employment. Your employer deducts it from your salary and pays it to the state. It is allowed as a deduction from salary under the income tax law (old regime only), and no state can charge more than 2,500 rupees in a year under Article 276 of the Constitution.
How much professional tax is deducted from my salary?
It depends on your state and your salary slab. In most paying states the top slab works out to about 200 rupees a month, so roughly 2,400 to 2,500 rupees a year. Some states deduct a slightly higher amount in the last month so the yearly total reaches 2,500.
Which states do not charge professional tax?
Several states and union territories do not levy it, including Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. If you work in these places, no professional tax is deducted.
Is professional tax monthly or yearly?
It varies by state. Most states deduct it monthly. A few collect it half yearly (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry) or yearly (Bihar, Manipur). Whatever the cycle, the total for the year is capped at 2,500 rupees.
Is professional tax the same in the new tax regime?
Professional tax is a state levy and is charged regardless of your income tax regime. However, claiming it as a deduction while computing income tax is allowed only under the old regime. The amount your state deducts does not change.
