How the EPS pension is calculated
That single line decides the whole payout. The work is in the two inputs, because EPFO defines both of them narrowly and most people overestimate each one.
Pensionable salary
The average of your monthly wages (Basic plus DA) over the last 60 months before you leave the pension fund. The 2014 amendment to EPS 95 moved the window from 12 to 60 months for pensions starting on or after 1 September 2014, and the Supreme Court upheld it on 4 November 2022. EPS 2026 kept it.
- For standard members each month is capped at the wage ceiling in force: ₹15,000 up to 16 September 2026 and ₹25,000 from 17 September 2026.
- Only members whose higher pension joint option was accepted get pension on their real wages.
- Non-contributory periods inside those 60 months are excluded from the average.
Pensionable service
Total service for which EPS contributions were paid, rounded to the nearest year. Six months or more rounds up, less than six months is dropped.
- Complete 20 years or more and EPFO adds a bonus weightage of 2 years before applying the formula.
- Service with different employers adds up, but only if you transferred the account instead of withdrawing it.
- You need 10 years minimum to get a monthly pension at all.
Worked example (the sample values): 25 years of service, exit in March 2031
| Average wages of last 60 months | ₹42,000 |
| 60-month window | April 2026 to March 2031 |
| 6 months (April to September 2026) capped at ₹15,000 | ₹90,000 |
| 54 months (October 2026 onwards) capped at ₹25,000 | ₹13,50,000 |
| Pensionable salary (₹14,40,000 ÷ 60) | ₹24,000 |
| Service 25 years + 2 years weightage | 27 years |
| 24,000 × 27 ÷ 70 | ₹9,257 |
| Monthly pension from age 58 | ₹9,257 |
Had the same member exited in March 2026, every month would have been capped at ₹15,000 and the pension would be 15,000 × 27 ÷ 70 = ₹5,786. How EPFO will apply the two ceilings inside the 60-month average is our reading of the scheme; EPFO had not published worked examples as of October 2026.
Taking it early, or waiting
58 is the normal pension age. You can move it either way, and the adjustment is permanent.
| Age you start the pension | Adjustment | On a ₹5,786 base pension (all months at ₹15,000) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | Reduced 32 percent (4 percent × 8 years) | ₹3,935 |
| 55 | Reduced 12 percent | ₹5,092 |
| 58 (normal) | No adjustment | ₹5,786 |
| 60 | Increased 8 percent | ₹6,249 |
Early pension needs 10 years of eligible service and cannot start before 50. The reduction is applied for life, not just for the years you drew it early.
What changed with EPS 2026
What stayed the same
- The formula, still pensionable salary times service divided by 70.
- The 60 month averaging window for pensionable salary.
- Employer 8.33 percent and Central Government 1.16 percent, both subject to the wage ceiling.
- The minimum pension of ₹1,000 a month, unchanged since 1 September 2014.
- Existing pensioners continue without any fresh application.
What is new
- EPS 95 and the Family Pension Scheme, 1971 are replaced by one scheme notified on 29 June 2026 (G.S.R. 527(E)) under the Code on Social Security, 2020.
- Pension claims must be settled within 20 days.
- EPFO pays 12 percent annual interest if a claim is delayed beyond that.
- Higher pension provisions are now written into the scheme itself.
- Heavier emphasis on online claims and digital compliance.
Two things worth watching
- The wage ceiling. The Cabinet approved raising the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month, notified as S.O. 5109(E) and effective 17 September 2026. At the ceiling, employee PF is up to ₹3,000 a month and the employer splits its 12% into ₹2,083 for EPS and ₹917 for EPF. This calculator applies it to months from October 2026 onwards. Watch for EPFO circulars on how the transition month and the 60-month average are handled.
- The minimum pension. A parliamentary panel and pensioner bodies have pushed for a rise from 1,000 rupees, with proposals ranging from 1,500 to 7,500 rupees. None has been approved, so 1,000 rupees stands.
If you have less than 10 years
No monthly pension, but the money is not lost. You can take the withdrawal benefit through Form 10C, which pays a lump sum based on a table of your wages and completed years. Or you can ask for a Scheme Certificate, which parks the completed service so it is added on if you rejoin an EPF covered employer later. If you expect to keep working in the organised sector, the Scheme Certificate is usually the better call, because service only counts toward the 10 year threshold and the 20 year weightage if you preserve it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the EPS pension calculation formula?
Monthly pension = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70. Pensionable salary is the average monthly wages (basic + DA) of the last 60 months before you leave the pension fund, each month capped at the wage ceiling in force. Pensionable service is contributory service rounded to the nearest year, plus 2 years if you have 20 years or more.
What is the EPS wage ceiling in 2026?
The EPFO wage ceiling rose from 15,000 to 25,000 rupees a month with effect from 17 September 2026 (S.O. 5109(E) under the Code on Social Security, 2020), after Cabinet approval. The maximum employer contribution to EPS goes from 1,250 to about 2,083 rupees a month. Months before the change stay capped at 15,000 rupees in your 60-month average.
Has EPS 95 been replaced by EPS 2026?
Yes. The Employees' Pension Scheme, 2026 was notified on 29 June 2026 (G.S.R. 527(E)) under the Code on Social Security, 2020, replacing EPS 1995 and the Employees' Family Pension Scheme, 1971. The formula, the 8.33 percent employer share, the 1.16 percent Central Government share and the 1,000 rupee minimum pension carried over.
What is the minimum EPS pension in 2026?
1,000 rupees a month, the floor in force since 1 September 2014. It was not raised when EPS 2026 was notified. Proposals for a higher minimum have been discussed but none has been approved as of October 2026.
How many years of service do I need for an EPS pension?
At least 10 years of eligible service. Below that you can take the withdrawal benefit with Form 10C, or ask for a Scheme Certificate so the service is carried forward if you later join another EPF-covered employer. Service across employers adds up only if you transferred the account instead of withdrawing it.
Can I take my EPS pension before 58?
Yes, from age 50 if you have 10 years of eligible service. The pension is reduced by 4 percent for each year you are short of 58, so starting at 55 cuts it by 12 percent for life. If you defer past 58, it rises by 4 percent a year up to age 60.
Why is my EPS pension low when my salary is high?
Because pensionable salary is capped at the wage ceiling, not your actual pay. Until 16 September 2026 the cap was 15,000 rupees, which limits a full-career pension to roughly 7,900 rupees a month. The new 25,000 rupee ceiling lifts this only for months after the change, unless your higher pension joint option was approved.
What is the 2 year weightage in EPS?
If your pensionable service is 20 years or more, EPFO adds 2 years before applying the formula. So 25 years is treated as 27 years. On a pensionable salary of 15,000 rupees that is worth about 428 rupees a month for life.
