How PF is calculated on your salary
The 12 percent split
EPF is 12 percent of Basic + DA from you and 12 percent from your employer. It is not 12 percent of gross or of CTC. Your full 12 percent goes to EPF. The employer 12 percent splits in two:
When your Basic + DA is above the ₹25,000 ceiling, EPS stays frozen at ₹2,083 (it was ₹1,250 under the old ₹15,000 ceiling, until 16 September 2026) and the rest of the employer 12 percent goes into your EPF. Members who joined after 1 September 2014 with wages above the ceiling at joining are generally not EPS members, so their full employer 12 percent goes to EPF; check your passbook.
Rules and limits (2026-27)
- Wage ceiling ₹25,000 from 17 September 2026: raised from ₹15,000, the first change since 2014. The EPS diversion is 8.33 percent of at most ₹25,000, so EPS is capped at about ₹2,083 a month (₹1,250 before).
- Interest 8.25 percent: recommended by the CBT for FY 2025-26 and approved by the government in June 2026. The FY 2026-27 rate is usually declared around February or March 2027, so the calculator assumes 8.25 percent until then. It is worked out on the monthly running balance but credited once a year on 31 March.
- EPS does not earn interest: the pension slice funds a defined pension, so a correct corpus grows only the EPF part. Many calculators get this wrong.
- 10 percent rate: applies to units with fewer than 20 employees, sick units, and a few notified industries (beedi, brick, jute, coir, guar gum).
- VPF: you can add up to 100 percent of Basic + DA on top of the 12 percent. Same account, same 8.25 percent, no employer match.
Worked example: Basic + DA of ₹25,000 a month
Standard 12 percent rate, PF applied on actual Basic + DA, under the ₹25,000 wage ceiling in force from 17 September 2026. 8.33 percent of ₹25,000 is ₹2,082.50, rounded to ₹2,083.
| Your EPF (12% of ₹25,000) | ₹3,000 |
| Employer to EPS (8.33% of ₹25,000) | ₹2,083 |
| Employer to EPF (₹3,000 minus ₹2,083) | ₹917 |
| Lands in your EPF account this month | ₹3,917 |
| EPS pension fund this month (separate) | ₹2,083 |
Only the ₹3,917 grows at 8.25 percent. Under the old ₹15,000 ceiling the split was ₹1,250 to EPS and ₹4,750 to EPF. The ₹2,083 sits in EPS and funds your pension using the formula pensionable salary times pensionable service divided by 70.
If your salary is above the ₹25,000 ceiling
Two common employer policies
- On actual Basic + DA (most common): both sides pay 12 percent of your real Basic + DA. EPS stays at ₹2,083, and the rest of the employer share tops up your EPF. This is the default in the calculator.
- Capped at the ceiling: both sides pay 12 percent of ₹25,000, which is ₹3,000 each. EPS is ₹2,083 and the employer EPF is ₹917. Before 17 September 2026 this was the flat ₹1,800 approach (12 percent of ₹15,000).
Use the "Apply PF on" toggle to switch between the two and compare your take-home and corpus.
Employer cost, the real CTC view
On top of the 12 percent, the employer alone pays:
- EPF admin charges: 0.50 percent of PF wages (minimum ₹500 a month for the establishment).
- EDLI insurance: 0.50 percent of wages up to the wage ceiling (₹125 a month at ₹25,000; it was ₹75 at ₹15,000). The maximum EDLI death cover was ₹7 lakh as last notified; check EPFO for any revision after the ceiling change.
So the true employer cost is roughly 13 percent of PF wages. None of these admin or insurance charges come out of your salary.
Is your PF taxable?
EPF is broadly exempt-exempt-exempt, but three rules can make part of it taxable. The contribution itself stays tax-advantaged; the catches are on high contributions and on early exits.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Your own EPF + VPF contribution above ₹2.5 lakh a year | Interest on the excess is taxable. TDS of 10 percent applies (Section 194A in the 1961 Act numbering). Only your contribution counts toward the limit, not the employer share. The limit is ₹5 lakh if the employer makes no contribution. |
| Employer contribution above ₹7.5 lakh a year | Employer contributions to EPF, NPS and superannuation together above ₹7.5 lakh are taxable as a perquisite, plus the return on the excess. |
| Withdrawal after 5 years of service | Fully tax-free. The 5 years can span employers if you transferred your balance instead of withdrawing it. |
| Withdrawal before 5 years, amount ₹50,000 or more | Taxable. TDS of 10 percent with PAN, or 20 percent without PAN (cut from the maximum marginal rate from 1 April 2023). Form 15G or 15H can avoid TDS if your income is below the taxable limit. |
Exits due to ill-health, the employer closing down, or other reasons beyond your control are not taxed even before 5 years. From 1 April 2026, this TDS (Section 192A of the 1961 Act) is carried into Section 392 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, with the same rates and thresholds.
Which calculator do I need?
- EPF calculator (this page): the monthly 12% + 12% split on your salary and the corpus it builds by retirement.
- VPF calculator: whether putting in more than 12% is worth it, and when interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year becomes taxable.
- PF withdrawal calculator: how much you can take out now (partial or final) and the TDS on it.
How is PF calculated on my salary?
EPF is 12 percent of Basic + DA from you and 12 percent from your employer. Your 12 percent goes fully to EPF. Of the employer 12 percent, 8.33 percent (capped at ₹2,083) goes to the EPS pension fund and the rest goes to your EPF. On a Basic + DA of ₹25,000 you contribute ₹3,000, the employer sends ₹2,083 to EPS and ₹917 to EPF, so ₹3,917 lands in your EPF that month (under the ₹25,000 wage ceiling in force from 17 September 2026).
Why is my pension (EPS) share capped?
The EPS share is 8.33 percent of wages, but only up to the wage ceiling. From 17 September 2026 the ceiling is ₹25,000, so the maximum is about ₹2,083 a month (it was ₹1,250 under the old ₹15,000 ceiling), however high your salary. The rest of the employer 12 percent is redirected into your EPF account, which is the part that earns interest.
What is the latest EPF interest rate?
8.25 percent per annum for FY 2025-26, recommended by the EPFO Central Board of Trustees and approved by the government in June 2026. The same rate applied in FY 2024-25 and FY 2023-24. The rate for FY 2026-27 has not been declared yet, so this calculator assumes 8.25 percent. Interest is computed on the monthly running balance and credited once a year on 31 March. The EPS pension portion does not earn this interest, which is why this calculator grows only the EPF part.
What is the EPF wage ceiling now?
₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026, raised from ₹15,000 after about 12 years. Employees earning up to ₹25,000 are now covered compulsorily, and the EPS share rises to 8.33 percent of up to ₹25,000, about ₹2,083 a month. If your employer caps PF at the ceiling, both your share and the employer share become ₹3,000 instead of ₹1,800.
What is VPF and should I use it?
VPF (Voluntary Provident Fund) lets you contribute more than 12 percent, up to 100 percent of Basic + DA, into the same EPF account at the same 8.25 percent rate. The employer does not match it. The VPF calculator shows how much extra corpus it adds. It is a simple way to build a larger tax-advantaged corpus, but remember your own EPF + VPF contribution above ₹2.5 lakh a year earns taxable interest.
Is PF withdrawal before 5 years taxable?
Yes. After 5 years of continuous service withdrawal is fully tax-free. Before 5 years it is taxable, and TDS applies if the amount is ₹50,000 or more: 10 percent with PAN, 20 percent without PAN. The PF withdrawal calculator works out the TDS for your case. Exits due to ill-health or the employer shutting down are exempt.
