What is a live coding interview?

A live coding interview on GetHirePlus is a real-time technical interview held in a shared code editor. The candidate writes code in one of 8+ languages, runs it in the browser and explains their approach on video. Every keystroke is recorded for playback, and an AI-drafted scorecard is ready for the interviewer to review and adjust.

Built for the technical round

The parts of a coding interview that usually need three tools: an editor, a compiler and a call.

Shared code editor

Interviewer and candidate type in the same file and see each other's changes as they happen. Syntax highlighting and auto-indent work out of the box.

Compile and run in the browser

Candidates execute their code inside the interview. Output, errors and test results show up in the same window, so nobody pastes code into a local terminal.

Code playback

The recording keeps video, audio and the full code history. Scrub through the timeline to see where a candidate hesitated, refactored or added a test.

Whiteboard for system design

Switch to the whiteboard to sketch architecture, data models or request flows together, then go back to the editor to implement one piece of it.

Proctoring for coding rounds

Tab switches, window focus changes and paste events are logged with timestamps. Large pastes are marked on the playback timeline.

AI-drafted scorecard

After the session, GetHirePlus drafts a scorecard covering code quality, problem-solving approach and communication. The interviewer edits it before anyone else sees it.

Pick the language the job uses

The editor supports 8+ programming languages with syntax highlighting and live execution. Choose one when you create the interview, or let the candidate pick.

Python
JavaScript
TypeScript
Java
C++
Go
and more

From invite to scorecard

Set up the problem once. The room, the recording and the write-up are handled for you.

1

Create the coding interview

Pick the language and the problem set, or leave it open-ended, and send the candidate a join link. They do not need an account.

2

Candidate joins in the browser

The candidate opens the link, allows camera and mic, and lands in the room with the editor, video and instructions on one screen. Nothing to install.

3

Write, run and discuss the code

You co-edit in real time while the candidate runs their solution and sees output immediately. A private notes panel sits next to the shared editor.

4

Review the playback and scorecard

The recording, code history and AI-drafted scorecard are saved to the candidate's profile in the GetHirePlus applicant tracking system, where the hiring team can comment and decide.

See how the code was written, not just the final answer

A pasted solution looks very different on a playback timeline from one typed, run, broken and fixed. Proctoring runs in the background and flags events for a person to review. It does not reject anyone on its own. For more on this, read our guide on stopping candidates from cheating with AI in interviews.

  • Tab-switch and window focus detection
  • Paste events logged with timestamps and marked on the timeline
  • Incident report attached to every interview
  • Reviewer can dismiss false positives before sharing
  • No browser extension or plugin required

The last technical check before an offer

Most teams put a live coding round after an automated filter. AI resume screening ranks applicants, a take-home coding assessment tests the basics at volume, and the live round confirms the candidate can do the work with someone watching. That last step matters more now that resumes and take-home answers are easy to generate. Our post on skillfishing and how to verify candidate skills covers why.

Live coding interview questions

What engineering managers and recruiters ask before running technical rounds on GetHirePlus.

The editor supports 8+ languages, including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C++ and Go. Candidates compile and run code in the browser, so there is no local setup.
Yes. Both sides type in the same file and see changes as they happen, with syntax highlighting, auto-indent and live execution. The interviewer also has a private notes panel the candidate cannot see.
Yes. Each session is recorded with video, audio and the full code history. Reviewers can scrub the timeline to see how the solution was built, which helps hiring managers who were not in the room.
GetHirePlus logs tab switches, window focus changes and paste events with timestamps, and marks large pastes on the playback timeline. No tool catches everything, so the strongest signal is still asking the candidate to explain and change their code while you watch. Flags go to a reviewer; they do not reject anyone automatically.
No. The editor, compiler, video and proctoring all run in the browser. Candidates join from a link and do not need an account.
Yes. The interview room has a shared whiteboard for architecture diagrams, data models and request flows. You can move between the whiteboard and the code editor in the same session.
A coding assessment is taken alone, on the candidate's schedule, and scored automatically, which suits early screening at volume. A live coding interview is a scheduled session with an interviewer, so you can ask follow-up questions and watch the candidate change their approach. Many teams use the assessment first and the live round for the shortlist.
